The seminar itself took place on 11th March and was attended by some 60 delegates. Mr Jaap Jepma, Chairman, led both speakers and audience with his energetic, informal and stimulating approach. A list of international speakers presented experiences and viewpoints from the perspectives of the farmer, the chairman, the policy maker and the water manager. Topics presented included adaptation to climate change on a farm level and the central role of farmers in this. The importance of sustainable soil and water management was also emphasised.
Robert Schröder, representing the Union of Drinkwater Companies in Brussels, provided insights to the European Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the reforms to be expected by the end of 2013. Principle subjects as food production, water quality and water quantity must be taken into account when developing an economically viable agricultural sector.
The Aquarius seminar ended with a lively forum discussion that resulted in some remarkable conclusions. If you would like to read more then download the Drenthe Workshop Report. |
